Three Sources For Podcast

1. Podcast: J Spot - EP 1: A J Spot Story - Why Don't I Look like a Disney Princess?

This podcast mentioned both of Cinderella and the Princess and the Frog. Based on their conversation, they pointed out that Cinderella was represented as a servant in the movie, and this is because this is women’s role to doing housework during that time period. Moreover, they also mentioned that it may spread a wrong message to children that the Cinderella was waiting for a man to save her, rather than by their own efforts. For the Princess and the Frog, Jess and Jade said a deep meaning of the decision Tiana made, which is “having a strong family support system, people who love you and around you more important than you have a good job” (17:30). Based on what Jess and Jade talked about, I can use them as examples of what are the differences between Cinderella and Tiana.

2. Disney’s Magic Mirror: The Disney Corporation’s Impact on the Folk & Fairy Tale Genre ----Lynda Hass and Shaina Trapedo

This is an essay wrote by Hass and Trapedo which talked about the developing and changes of Disney fairy tales and animated movies. Hass and Trapedo explained how princesses were portrayed in the early Disney films, which were showed by their personalities. For example, the early princesses were always waiting a men or prince to rescue them, such as the Snow White and Cinderella. Furthermore, the early princesses were described as a nice and warm-hearted, but the Disney is trying to portray the princess and the female characters to be independent and courageous, like Mulan and Tiana. For the new Disney movies, they are expressing deeper meaning like “independence is power, success doesn’t come easy, and relationships take work” (Hass and Trapedo 13), which represented in the Princess and the Frog. This is a good example of how the princesses’ personalities have changed, and I can also use this is my podcast since our segment is about Cinderella and The Princess and the Frog.

3. Feminism and Gender Roles in The Princess and The Frog----Ana Mejia

This is a blog post by Ana Mejia and mainly discussed the feminism and gender roles showed in The Princess and The Frog. The author started the essay with the existed gender problems which established by our society, and then switched this to the gender issues presented by the characters in the movie. The author explained the main plot and discussed gender stereotypes. For example, “Through Tiana’s disgust and rejection of the “kissing a frog to get a prince” idea, she is also rejecting the idea of needing a prince to save her” (Mejia). This is a good example I can use in the podcast, since Tiana’s idea is reverse to what Cinderella did. And this also relates to what Jess and Jade said in the podcast that the princess is waiting for a price to save, therefore, this shows Disney’s changing of portraying female characters. In addition, Tiana believed that only hardworking will make her dream comes true, rather than based on the magical like what Cinderella’s dress and crystal shoes.
